The 6th annual Digital Frontiers Conference is coming home to the University of North Texas in September, 2017! 

Digital Frontiers is the largest and longest-running digital humanities conference in Texas. Founded at UNT in 2012, Digital Frontiers is an annual conference that explores advances and research in humanities and cultural memory through the lenses of digital scholarship, technology, and multidisciplinary discourse. This year's conference is September 21-23 at the University of North Texas, and features Keynote Speakers Jacqueline Wernimont and Stacie Williams.

The theme for the 2017 Digital Frontiers Conference is Exploring the Edges, Pushing the Boundaries. The conference’s vision is to examine research and projects involving new or newly-applied technologies, concepts, processes, and methodologies; to highlight innovations, insights and emerging areas of research; to reach out to new audiences and communities, especially the underserved; to probe into efforts, both mainstream and on the margins, to achieve social justice via digital humanities resistance to the status quo; and to showcase practical applications of openly available tools and resources that foster investigations that may have been impossible or deemed unanswerable in the past.

News and Announcements

If you're presenting at DF17, here are some tips to make things go more smoothly for everyone:

  1. Register. All Presenters must register to participate. If you haven't registered, email digitalfrontiers@unt.edu for instructions.
  2. Schedule. Check out the Conference Schedule to see when you're on.
  3. Your Info. Check the website to confirm that your bio and photo are correct. Email digitalfrontiers@unt.edu if you need to update your information.
  4. No Dongles. The conference facility runs on Windows. To respect the time of the other presenters and the attendees, we will not be swapping out hardware for any presenter this year. Presenters are encouraged to bring a Windows compatible presentation on a jump drive, or upload their presentation to the shared doc folder for their session in advance. Moderators will contact you with this information.
  5. Inclusion. Digital Frontiers is committed to providing a harassment-free environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, religion or other group status. Review our Statement of Inclusion.
  6. Accessibility. Presenters needing accommodations should notify digitalfrontiers@unt.edu as soon as possible. Presenters should review the slides from this upcoming DLF webinar on Creating Accessible Presentations and endeavor to make their slides accessible. And always use the mic
  7. Time. Your moderator will be contacting you with details on time for your sessions. We endeavor to allow for 10-15 minutes of Q&A at the end of the session. To respect the time of other presenters and attendees, timekeepers will cut off speakers who go over time.
  8. Repository. We encourage all presenters to contribute their presentations to the Digital Frontiers Collection of the UNT Institutional Repository. To facilitate this process, presenters can upload their slides to the shared doc folder for their session.
  9. Handouts. If presenters would like to share digital handouts, they can upload them to the shared doc folder for their session. The documents will be linked to their sessions on the conference website.
  10. Community. Join the Facebook Group. Make connections for ride/room shares, and share news with the DF community.
  11. Be Social. Follow us on Twitter and start talking about the conference. Consider these Principles of Conference Tweeting when live-tweeting the conference.

We're looking forward to seeing you at #DF17UNT! Since we're on the UNT campus, parking can be an adventure. Here are a few things you can do to make it easier.

1. Check with your hotel about a shuttle. Many area hotels provide complimentary shuttle service and are happy to coordinate with groups. If you post in the Facebook group or email digitalfrontiers@unt.edu to let us know where you're staying, we can give the hotel a heads up with the conference schedule.

2. Explore alternative transportation options. Visit the Denton County Transportation Authority (Rail and Bus Routes)

3. Share a ride. Feel free to use our Facebook Group to coordinate contacts for ride shares and other logistics (requires Facebook login).

4. Buy a permit. Parking is $5 per day for a visitor permit. Please register as a guest user on the UNT Parking Portal to purchase and print out your permits. We will not have printing available in the conference facility.

5. Check out the map. The best parking for the Gateway Center is Lot 20 on North Texas Boulevard. You can download the campus parking map here.

The conference recognizes creativity and collaboration across academic subjects by bringing together researchers, students, librarians, archivists, genealogists, historians, information and technology professionals, and scientists.

The theme for the 2017 Digital Frontiers Conference is Exploring the Edges, Pushing the Boundaries. The conference’s vision is to examine research and projects involving new or newly-applied technologies, concepts, processes, and methodologies; to highlight innovations, insights and emerging areas of research; to reach out to new audiences and communities, especially the underserved; to probe into efforts, both mainstream and on the margins, to achieve social justice via digital humanities resistance to the status quo; and to showcase practical applications of openly available tools and resources that foster investigations that may have been impossible or deemed unanswerable in the past.

The Digital Frontiers program committee invites proposals for the 2017 conference (September 21-23). The program committee encourages imagination and originality in programming proposals. Conference content may include:

  • Panel Discussions & Seminars
  • Individual Scholarly Papers (early stage research, project updates, and single-institution “case studies” should be submitted as posters)*
  • Lightning Talks, PechaKucha Sessions
  • Hands-On Workshops

*Look for a separate Call for Submissions for Posters and Infographics

Proposals will be peer reviewed, with final decisions made by the program committee. The program committee will be favorably disposed toward content that addresses the work, needs, or other aspects of:

  • Projects that exemplify ethical engagement and collaboration with colleagues and students
  • Social justice and digital humanities; DH projects as platforms for expression and resistance
  • Collaborations that reach beyond the academy
  • Projects exploring area studies and underrepresented groups (e.g. Native American and other Indigenous populations, African-American, Latinx, Asian-American; international, non-U.S. DH, including projects in languages other than English)
  • Projects exploring LGBTQIA themes, or queering DH
  • Projects from galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM)
  • DH for primary and secondary education; DH for public libraries
  • Genealogical research & projects in the digital sphere
  • Critical digital pedagogy
  • Projects involving the public or outreach efforts to include a wide audience
  • Pitfalls and failures in digital humanities projects and programs

Call for Poster & Infographic Proposals: Digital Frontiers 2017

The conference recognizes creativity and collaboration across academic disciplines by bringing together researchers, students, librarians, archivists, genealogists, historians, information and technology professionals, and scientists.

 

The Digital Frontiers program committee invites poster & infographic proposals for the 2017 conference (September 21-23). The program committee encourages imagination and originality in programming proposals and promotes the inclusion of student research. Proposals may be for:

 

Posters

Poster proposals should be in the form of an abstract of no more than 250 words describing the topic to be presented. Please do not submit the final poster! Further guidelines and specifications will be provided upon acceptance.

  • A poster that presents a central hypothesis, research methodology, and outcomes in a clear, visually-appealing format.
  • Posters should offer a general summary of your findings and main points, and may be accompanied by a brief talk.
  • Recommended size 36 x 48, please include the estimated size of your submission in the proposal if it exceeds the recommended size.

Infographics

Infographic submissions should include a 250 word description of the visualization including the methods, tool(s), dataset, and/or purpose, and an optional near-final version of the complete infographic if available (drafts are not required at submission).

  • An infographic that offers a single, informative visual image, or series of images, that represents data or information pertinent to your central research question(s).
  • The infographic should contain all of the information necessary for understanding your argument or main point.
  • Recommended size no less than 600 x 600 pixels to no more than 600 x 4800 pixels.

 

Proposals will be peer reviewed, with final decisions made by the program committee.

We are delighted to announce that Jacqueline Wernimont and Stacie Williams will be the keynote speakers for Digital Frontiers 2017.

Jacqueline Wernimont is an assistant professor of English at Arizona State University whose research examines civil rights in digital cultures. Stacie Williams is a librarian/archivist and expert on grassroots activism and cyberracism. Both speakers exemplify the conference theme, "Exploring the Edges, Pushing the Boundaries," and we're honored that they'll be joining us in September at UNT.
